Delhi Bar Body Halts Protest After Police Act on ‘Derogatory Remarks’ Video

New Delhi – A planned demonstration by district court lawyers in Delhi has been called off after police authorities took disciplinary action in response to a widely circulated video purportedly showing officers making derogatory remarks about the legal fraternity.

The Coordination Committee of all District Court Bar Associations of Delhi announced on Thursday evening, February 5, that its scheduled protest against police officials would no longer proceed.

The dispute arose from a social media video that gained significant traction, allegedly depicting personnel from the Sagarpur police station using what the bar association described as “defamatory, derogatory and highly unprofessional language against the legal fraternity.” This incident led to an urgent meeting of the committee earlier in the day, which resulted in a strong condemnation of the conduct, branding it as “wholly unacceptable and an affront to the dignity of the legal profession,” as per an earlier letter issued by the committee.

However, subsequent discussions between police authorities and members of the Coordination Committee at Patiala House proved constructive. The police leadership reportedly acknowledged the gravity of the misconduct and moved swiftly to address the issue.

Measures taken by the police include the initiation of a vigilance enquiry into the entire incident. Furthermore, a woman sub-inspector has been suspended, and the Sangrur Station House Officer (SHO), along with another woman sub-inspector, has been reassigned to the district line southwest. The committee was also informed that directives have been issued to “sensitise all police officials” to prevent future occurrences.

In light of these decisive actions, the bar association confirmed the cancellation of the protest planned for February 6, which was intended to take place at the Sagarpur police station and involve restricting police entry into the Patiala House Court Complex.
