ED Indicts Ex-R G Kar Principal in Money Laundering Case Linked to Hospital Scandal

Kolkata, Feb 6: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday lodged a formal chargesheet with a special court in Kolkata, escalating its investigation into suspected money laundering tied to financial malpractices at the publicly-funded R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Among those named in the chargesheet is Sandip Ghosh, the institution’s former principal, who is currently under judicial custody following his apprehension by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on separate financial irregularity charges.

The impetus for the initial CBI inquiry stemmed from a plea by Akhtar Ali, a former R G Kar Hospital official. His request for an investigation into alleged financial irregularities during Ghosh’s principalship was endorsed by the Calcutta High Court and subsequently affirmed by the Supreme Court. The ED, in turn, initiated its parallel investigation by filing an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR), a document akin to a police First Information Report, specifically tracing the purported money trail.

Notably, Ghosh’s tenure also coincided with the notorious rape and murder of a trainee doctor, whose body was discovered in the north Kolkata facility’s conference room on August 9, 2024. Sanjay Roy, a former civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police, was later convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment by the Sealdah sessions court in January 2025 for these horrific crimes.
